Introduction

For as long as I can remember I have wanted to work in a gallery space. I want to pursue this ambition and after doing my degree in Fine art I have decided that this is still the route I want to continue with.

Recently, I have co-curated a show in London at the R. K. Burt Gallery and already I have learnt how much work goes into an exhibition. If one small exhibition has taught me about how important advertising and networking is, then I wonder how much I could learn from a larger gallery and the curators that work there. I am very excited to learn how to put a thought provoking exhibition together, using ideas that I have learnt through my Fine Art degree, London Exhibition and hopefully through a Curating MA.

Experience

During my degree I did some work experience at the Nature in Art Gallery in Gloucester, which spurred my interest in the field further. Every Gallery has an identity, a theme of work that they like to work with. The Nature in Art Gallery is self explanatory - they exhibit artwork which relates to nature in someway. I want to work in a gallery which exhibits themes that relate to the world today.

Getting the general public involved with art is also something I would like to explore further. During the Now Us, London Exhibition I found it hard to convince the public to interact with the show. I am intrigued to find out how to entice an audience to come and see an exhibition, is it through the use of activities, the artists involved or something else?

Inspiration

I was in Bristol for Andrea Luka Zimmerman's Common Ground Exhibition as she is an artist that links closely to my own practice, so I wished to see her work for myself.

When I turned up I was pleasantly surprised by how the show had been put together. When previously encountering Film art in a space it didn't reflect the work I was watching, so when I entered this space and saw sofas and partially constructed rooms I was learning about how to curate a show around someone's work.

The exhibition has to highlight the artwork inside it, not overlook it. I was told by one of my tutors that a well curated show is one that you can't tell is curated. I want to be able to do this and I think that with time and experience I will gain the knowledge and understanding of what it means to be a curator.

Advertisement and Social Media

I have developed posters for all the shows I have been part of, from my interium shows to the Degree show and recent London Show. Some are to the side in the photo reel. I use the theme of the shows to develop the posters and social media posts.

The Degree Show was the most ambitious Social Media I have attempted, as I tried to post at least once everyday. We did a #twoartistsaday which was very popular as the public got to have a taste of the work in the show but not the whole picture. I took this and used it in the Now Us Exhibition Social Media account to promote the show and the artists in it.

I really enjoyed the Posters development and getting feedback from my team. I can be both an independent worker or a team player which really helps in this role as I need time to do the creation and changes but also time to discuss the changes and ideas.
